The Housing System Processing Supervisor I is responsible for supervising the day-to-day operation of the cage wash unit within Comparative Medicine. This is an introductory supervisor position within the department of Comparative Medicine overseeing a small team of personnel doing similar work.
Responsibilities
Essential Role Classification:
The Equipment Preparer is classified as essential personnel and, as such, is required to work with a minimal number of absences and during all Center closures except in the event of a major disaster when access to animal housing and use facilities is prohibited by governmental emergency personnel.
Management/ Leadership:
- Support the Assistant Director of Comparative Medicine (CM) in staff supervision ensuring efficient workflow, task completion, adherence to procedures, policies and team goals.
- Be familiar with basic Human Resources principles and establish a working relationship with HR business partners.
- Additional duties may include performance evaluations, disciplinary actions, hiring and layoff or termination decisions as appropriate.
Business Expertise and Operations:
- Assist the Assistant CM Director in projecting future needs for equipment prep staff, space, and equipment including adjusting workflow and priorities to improve quality and efficiency.
- Manage external equipment services teams including scheduling, training, supplies, and oversite while onsite.
- Manage inventory of feed, bedding, caging equipment and other wash supplies to ensure adequate stock and anticipation of potential interruptions in supply (weather, shipping, etc.)
Functional Research Knowledge:
- Has a comprehensive understanding of the range of processes, procedures and systems used to accomplish the Equipment Preparer team's work.
- Understands how the team relates to and impacts other related teams within core or between cores and other FH entities.
- Uses prescribed solutions, standard practices and historical precedence to problem solve including day to day technical and operational issues.
Equipment Oversight:
- Manage instrument(s) day-to-day operations including coordinating maintenance, record keeping and quality control
- Be an expert on the equipment in the wash areas understanding maintenance, parts, alert management, and lifespans.
Training and Education:
- Teach, document, develop, and expand the technical expertise and training materials for the equipment preparers.
- Mentor developing personnel within this shared resource as possible.
- Present information relevant to the shared resource both internally and externally to team.
People/Interpersonal Skills:
- Coach and encourage the team to meet daily deadlines and longer-term goals.
- Work within the team to accept and resolve challenges, monitor resources and output.
- Model the following items such as successful research practices, Fred Hutch's commitment to workplace respect, and research integrity and uphold a culture of support.
Perform other duties as assigned.
Qualifications
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:
- GED/ High School Diploma and 0.5 year of relevant experience
- A minimum of 1 year of relevant lab animal science, production, washroom, or lead experience
- Ability to wear Personal Protective Equipment including scrubs, gloves, shoe covers, gowns, ear plugs / muffs, face mask, and eye protection.
PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS:
- AALAS certification at the ALAT level or higher or CMAR
- Have sufficient verbal and written English communication skills to be able to follow written and verbal instructions and assimilate training presented in English.
- Ability to lift and move 50 lbs on a regular basis and sustained physical activities such as bending, balancing, stooping, reaching, and remain standing for long periods of time.
The hourly pay range for this position is from $31.26 to $44.51 and pay offered will be based on experience and qualifications.
This position is not eligible for H-1B sponsorship at this time.
